A Surprise Visitor at Our Cambridge Nursery: Meeting Gary the Rabbit

There was a lovely surprise waiting for the children at Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery Regent Terrace today. Gary the pet rabbit came to visit, and every child had the chance to meet a real animal up close. Days like this are one of the joys of early years childcare in Cambridge, where learning comes from real experiences rather than pictures in a book.

Following the Children’s Current Interests

Gary’s visit grew directly out of something the children have been fascinated by lately: pets. When we notice an interest taking hold, we build on it, and inviting a real rabbit into the nursery was the natural next step. This child-led approach runs through everything we do, so your child’s curiosity shapes what happens next rather than a fixed plan deciding it for them.

Meeting Gary One by One

Each child had their own turn with Gary, meeting him one at a time so that nobody felt rushed or overwhelmed. They gave him a gentle stroke and offered him his favourite snack, banana, which he was very happy to accept. For some of the children it was their first time meeting a rabbit, and the delight on their faces said it all.

Calm Voices and Gentle Hands

Gary’s visit also gave us the chance to revisit what the children had been learning earlier in the week. We talked about how rabbits keep their teeth healthy, and about why we need to stay calm and gentle to look after a rabbit’s wellbeing. Returning to learning in a new setting is how it really takes root, and this time the children could put it into practice with a real rabbit right in front of them.

What Your Child Gains from a Visit Like This

Meeting an animal like Gary offers children far more than a fun afternoon. Waiting for their turn builds patience, handling him gently builds empathy and self-control, and talking about how to care for him builds language and understanding of the world around them. These are the everyday moments that help confident, considerate children grow, and they sit alongside the wider early years learning and extra-curricular activities that fill each week at our Cambridge nursery.
