Exploring Pets, Habitats and Sea Life at Our Cambridge Nursery

At Monkey Puzzle Regent Terrace, one of Cambridge’s warmest and most welcoming day nurseries, our latest learning theme brought the animal world to life. From much-loved family pets to the creatures of the sea, the children spent the week discovering how different animals live and how we care for them.

Sharing Our Family Pets

Our lovely families kindly shared photos of their family pets, giving the children a wonderful starting point to talk about their own first-hand experiences. Seeing familiar faces (and paws) made the learning feel personal and real, and sparked plenty of happy conversations about the animals the children know and love at home.

Fun Facts About Pet Rabbits

To take things further, the children learned all about pet rabbits. They discovered that baby rabbits are called kittens, and that rabbits are classed as exotic pets, which means they need special attention and care. It is exactly the kind of surprising, memorable fact that young children love to share with their families at the end of the day.

Habitats, Sea Life and Sensory Fun

The children were also able to name different natural habitats for a range of animals, building their understanding of where creatures live and why. We then revisited the sea animals from our previous learning theme, talking about how we care for fish and the watery homes they need. What a fun sensory experience it was too, feeling the cold blue water and the wet, crunchy sand as the children explored a little underwater world of their own.

Why It Matters for Your Child

Themes like this are about far more than learning animal names. As the children share their own pets, handle new textures, and think about how living things are cared for, they are developing empathy, curiosity, communication, and early scientific thinking. For your child, that means an early years experience where every activity gently builds the confidence, kindness, and love of discovery that set them up for life. It is just one of the many ways we nurture every child during their time with us.
