Apple Bobbing in the Baby Room: Sensory Play and First Words at Our Cambridge Nursery
This week our youngest children at Monkey Puzzle Day Nursery Regent Terrace in Cambridge tried their hands at apple bobbing. A bowl of water and a few apples might sound simple, but for babies it opens up a whole world of discovery, from learning how objects behave to practising their very first words.
Splashes, Floating Apples and Cause and Effect
The babies were fascinated by the apples. They pushed them down under the water, watched them bob straight back up, then did it all over again, exploring cause and effect in the most hands-on way possible. Taking the apples in and out of the bowl and dropping them in to make big splashes kept their curiosity going, and every splash was another small lesson in how the world works.
First Words: Apple and Water
Alongside the play, our practitioners used the activity to practise single words such as “apple” and “water.” Linking a word to something a baby can see, touch and splash is one of the best ways to help early language take root, because the meaning is right there in their hands. It is a gentle, natural start to communication that builds week by week.
Why Sensory Play Matters for Babies
In the early years, babies learn through their senses and through repetition. Water play like this strengthens hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills, introduces simple scientific ideas such as floating and sinking, and gives children the confidence to explore and experiment. For your child, it means a baby room where every activity is chosen with their development in mind, wrapped up in the kind of fun that makes them want to come back for more. It is just one example of the thoughtful, play-based childcare we offer at Monkey Puzzle Regent Terrace.
